But he still has not found the melody, the real heart of the matter. This is the other function that our old friend Wagner declared to be especially required of a conductor: the ability to find the melody in this mass of notes. Well, here it is played, as you see, by the first violins, by the second violins an octave lower, and by the cellos an octave lower still.

So we have two elements moving at once, one climbing, the other descending.

This pull of the two lines against each other, tugging in opposite directions, sets up the atmosphere of tension and conflict which will characterize this whole first movement.

But the two lines are not all. There is a long held note in the other two horns growling out the bass.
